Anencephaly is the complete or partial absence of bones of the rear of the skull, the cerebral hemisphere of the brain and the meninges. Anencephaly occurs due to defect in the development and mostly affecting stillborn. Infants who may born alive are only able to survive only for few hours. Anencephaly is often associated with spina bifida. The prenatal screening of anencephaly may include ultrasound scanning and detection of the alpha fetoprotein.
