Alginates is a derivative of alginic acid which is a complex form of carbohydrates that is extracted from the brown seaweeds which absorbs the water. Alginates are inserted in antacid preparation such as Gaviscon or Gastrocote) for treating gastro esophageal reflux disease and heartburn. Antacid will form a layer on the stomach content which protect the lining of the esophagus from acid reflux. Alginates are also useful in dressing for any exuding wounds due to its highly absorbents nature.
