Medical Dictionary – The definition of Acid Base Balance
Acid Base balance is the balance achieve between the amount of bicarbonate and carbonic acid in the blood which need to be stabilized at a ratio of 1:20 to make sure that the concentration of the hydrogen ion of the plasma is constant at the value of pH 7.4. Alteration to the ratio may lead to disturbance of the acid base balance of the tissue and the blood which lead to alkalosis and acidosis. Acid base balance is regulated by the lungs and the kidneys.
