A self-induced and artificial fever (from the Latin factitius, made by art). This can occur in many ways,
the most common being the ingestion (and mouth holding) of hot liquids prior to a temperature check.
Factitious fever can often (but not always) be counteracted by measuring rectal temperature (which
may even serve as a punitive deterrent) or urinary temperature on voiding. If doing so, remember that
urinary temperature is a little lower than oral temperature.
