Oedema is the accumulation of excess interstitial fluid resulting in swelling of the tissue, or in other words, it is the clinically apparent increase in extracellular fluid volume. A weight gain of several kilograms often precedes overt manifestation of oedema. The older name of oedema was dropsy.
