Allspice
Allspice is also scientifically known as Pimenta dioica which falls under the family of Myrtaceae. Allspice is also known as Jamaica pepper, pimento, pimento and P.Officinalis.
Allspice generally present as tree about 10 meters high which produces fruit in the third year. The fruit consists of two kidney shaped green seeds which later turn to gloss black upon ripening.
Allspice is cultivated extensively in Cuba, Jamaica but grow indigenously in the West Indies and south America. Others may be found in Venezuela and Guyana.
Allspice is used traditionally for rheumatic or neuralgic pain and flatulence indigestion. Allspice ( Pimenta) may ease any constipation, dyspepsia or pain. ( Pimento) all spice may also be used as domestic spice.
It is called allspice due to it tastes like combination of cloves, juniper, pepper, cinnamon and berries. Allspice is useful for analgesic, antiseptic, anti oxidant, muscle relaxant, carminatives, rubefaciant ( causing redness of the skin due to dilation of the blood vessel and increase in the blood circulation.
The essential oil is extracted by the steam distillation from the fruit and leaves. The distillation is usually performed in Europe and America. Generally, the green unripe berries consist of more oil than the ripe berries. The largest percentage of oil contained in the shell of the fruit. The berries may also produce oleoresin.
The characteristic of the All spice / pimento leaf oil consist of brownish liquid or yellowish red with a powerful sweet spicy scent like cloves. Pimenta / all spice berry oil is a pale yellow liquid with a sweet warm balsamic spicy and fresh clean top note. Allspice blend well with lavender, geranium, ginger, labdanum, opopanax, ylang ylang, neroli and patchouli.
The all spcie / pamenta essential oil consists of eugenol which is 80% to the fruit and 96% in the leaves, cineol, methyl eugenol, caryophyllene and phenllandrene.
The eugenol which contained in the all spice’s essential oil may lead to mucous membrane and skin irritation.
The allspice / pimento essential oil may be used to treat fatigue, stiffness, rheumatism, muscle cramp and arthritis. It can only be used to treat depression, neuralgia, tension, stress and nervous exhaustion. In term of gastrointestinal tract, it is used to treat flatulence, cramp, nausea and indigestion.
