Arnica
Arnica or Arnica montana falls under the family of asteraceae. Arnica or also known as A. sororia, A.fulgens, wolf’s bane or leopard’s bane is well distributed in northern and central Europe with the oil production focused on Belgium, French and Germany.
Arnica is a perennial alpine herb. It consists of underground stem which lead to a rosette of pale oval leaves. Africa consists of high bearing single yellow daisy like flower.
There are other species of arnica such as A.cordifolia and other arnica found in America known as ‘mountain tobacco’.
Generally, arnica is useful as anti inflammatory and vulnerary (promote wound healing) agent. Arnica is considered as the best solution for cases of sprains or bruises. It works by stimulating peripheral blood supply (externally applies). Besides that it is useful to relieve any joint pain ( rheumatism) or any inflammatory condition. Arnica is avoided from any internal usage due to its toxicity.
The essential oil from arnica is extracted by steam distillation of the root and the flower of the carnica. Resinoid and tincture may also produce. The arnica’s essential oil is a yellow orange liquid with a hint of greenish blue and strong bitter spicy scent if extracted from the flower. It may also appear as butter brown or dark yellow oil and strong bitter scent if extracted from the root.
The composition of arnica includes thymohydroquinone, dimethyl ether, isobutyric ester of phlorol and other traces.
The oil extracted from the flower is useful in herbaceous types of perfumes as well as flavoring of certain liqueurs.
